This is to notify you that it needs to be updated. If you have been failing to keep up with regular updates on your antivirus software, you might not be as protected as you think you are.

In fact, your computer could be at risk from a new virus that your antivirus software is not yet aware of – simply because it’s out-of-date.

Keep in mind, once loaded, security software (antivirus / anti-malware, etc.) is only as good as the information available at the time of its release. With that said, “bad actors” such as the people who actually create the viruses, hackers, and other ill-intentioned individuals are constantly coming up with new and inventive ways to attack you.

This has critical implications with regard to your vulnerability. Let’s put it this way, even if you installed new antivirus software a few months ago, you could already be at-risk for a host of potential new virus and malware attacks (software programs that can damage your data or computer).

The good news is that this isn’t a no-win situation. Something to keep in mind is that as threats evolve, so do anti-threat technologies. Security experts from security companies (such as Bitdefender) are constantly working to anticipate and respond to new types of attacks.

Once a new attack method becomes known, it’s not long before Bitdefender finds a way to identify the threat, prevent its spread, and remedy its effects. However, developing new technologies and response strategies is only part of the solution. The latest technologies and information will still have to make their way from the security company labs to your computers, etc. This is where antivirus updates come into play (hint hint).

Antivirus creators understand the benefit of developing and delivering program updates. For example, the maker of your operating system (Windows) develops system updates on a regular basis. In these cases, most often these latest updates are transferred to your computer over the Internet.

Also in most cases, the same thing happens for your Internet browser software. Sometimes these updates will improve basic functionality and features and other times, they deal with more critical issues, like security holes. Whatever the case, at this point, you’ve probably already grown accustomed to updating software, and you’ve likely used the Internet to do just that.

The Internet is a particularly important conduit for security software updates. Ironically, this is the same delivery medium used by viruses and other threats along with anti-threat technology updates.

The reality is that antivirus / security firms can use the Internet just as effectively as hackers – this is a good thing! In fact, the Internet has become the primary delivery method for security update.

Did you know that some viruses and malware can actually hack into your system and delete or corrupt your computer’s data (pictures, videos, company documents, etc.)?

Some viruses can even lock down your information with a password that you don’t know!

If you have any sort of sensitive, valuable, or private information (PII) on your computer (which most people do) it is crucial to make sure that you are protected against the latest security threats.

Are you aware that someone can access your antivirus software and disable “real-time” monitoring which automatically downloads updates?

This can happen when someone is trying to compromise your computer’s security and other times it can happen by accident. If you have set your antivirus software to automatically update but it has been turned off without your knowledge, you have a false sense of security. This will lead you to believe that you are protected when you’re really not.

Make sure to verify that your computer has the latest software and that it is regularly updating with the latest virus information.

Also keep in mind that if your computer does catch a virus, it may affect your computer along with passing itself along to other computers via email, USB flash drives, or even over a network. This means that other computers or all of the other computers at your office could be infected simply because you didn’t update your virus protection.

Imagine having to explain that to everyone else!

Ok, so you have antivirus software installed on your computers to protect yourself from threats to you.
